St John the Evangelist This impressive Victorian, neo-gothic building was completed and consecrated in 1887. Designed by John Loughborough Pearson it stands in a quiet, leafy corner of South London and was described as the most beautiful church of modern times by a commentator of the day. Designed to seat 1,200 people, the interior of high brick vaulted ceilings and beautifully carved masonry combine with the proportions to give the church wonderful acoustics. The church houses a fine Lewis organ, designed in part by the first organist of the church Dr Alfred J Eyre who was at the same time organist at the Crystal Palace the site of which is less than half a mile from the church. The church was severely damaged by enemy action during the last world war but was carefully restored and is now a Grade 1 listed building. St John's has a strong tradition of music and hosts many events each year including a series of organ recitals. It is expected that concerts will attract good numbers in appreciative audiences. |
